The Harmful Substances Contained in Ordinary Shampoos
Ordinary shampoos often contain anionic surfactants such as sulfates and sulfonated ethoxylated compounds. These include:
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
- Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALS)
- Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
- Ammonium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (ALES)
- TEA Lauryl Ether Sulfate
- Disodium Oleamid MEA Sulfosuccinate
- Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate
- Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfosuccinate
These compounds act as cleansing and foaming agents and are derivatives of coconut oil. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are chemically similar, but Laureth is produced through an ethoxylation process. This process not only produces Laureth but also generates a toxic and carcinogenic byproduct known as 1,4-Dioxane.
This toxic substance is also found in Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. Therefore, experts recommend avoiding products that contain ingredients with the “-eth” suffix in their names.
1,4-Dioxane is extremely dangerous and has long-term carcinogenic effects on the body, as the liver cannot metabolize it. Sulfated surfactants and the resulting dioxane can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled as steam during bathing, potentially entering the lungs and increasing the risk of cancer.
......................................................................................................................................
Sulphated surfactants are inexpensive detergent substances with strong foaming properties. This is why they are widely used in the production of industrial detergents such as vehicle cleaners, car wash solutions, dishwashing liquids, and similar products. However, the disadvantages of sulphated surfactants in shampoos are numerous.
These surfactants, by forming a chemical bridge between oil-soluble and water-soluble components, can disrupt the chemical structure of proteins in cells. This disruption reduces or eliminates the cells’ ability to repair themselves, requiring significantly more energy for regeneration. Other side effects resulting from the destruction of protein structures include hair fragility and frizz, as well as inflammation of the eyes and scalp.
Moreover, the impact of these substances on hair follicles and their protein variations can cause serious damage, potentially leading to hair loss. The ability of these surfactants to impair the function of epidermal cells that produce antigens may increase the risk of tumors, as the dysfunction of these cells weakens the immune response. By penetrating the epithelium and destroying proteins, sulphated surfactants can also raise the risk of cancer.
..................................................................................................................................
The Sulfated surfactants will disrupt the hormonal balance and worsening the symptoms before and after
periods and while having periods. Even in some cases it has been reported that this substance can reduce the fertility in men. The other hormonal side effects of this substance is increasing the conversion of testosterone Dihydroxytryptamine testosterone (DHT) and to worsening of hair loss.
The Sulfated surfactants by suppresses the glands which produces oil in scalp would cause the reduction of secretion of sebum or normal oil of scalp which will lead to severe dryness of hair shaft and scalp and eventually it would cause itchiness and hair shaft damage. After using shampoo, the sulfated surfactants immediately can cause the dryness and damage to the structure of hair shaft, inflammation, allergy in scalp and these destructive effects will remain for 17 days. The Sulfated surfactants in addition to inflammation, strongly tends to sediment on the hair shaft and scalp which causes overloading on the hair and opaque appearance. This substance also leaves destructive effects in cornea tissue. Eye irritation while taking the bath and eye inflammation after taking the bath caused by the sulfated surfactants in contact with the surface of cornea. Based on the present researchers it has been determined that the constant contact of corneal surface with sulfated surfactants may lead to blurred vision and eye weakness in long-term.
Nonionic surfactants including technical coconut ethanol acid amide is located in the list of inflammatory substances and carcinogenic.
The ethoxylated surfactants means the surfactants which are produced and prepared by the reaction of ethylene oxide gas or propylene oxide have severe impact on hair, body and skin which are recently discovered and even in Europe few of the brands have realized not to use this substance and they are introduced by PEG-FREE or Ethoxylate-Free labels.
......................................................................................................................................
In fact the produced surfactants with above mentioned methods having significant amount of dioxin that its carcinogenic effects have been mentioned earlier. The following substances are examples of ethoxylated surfactants available in current shampoos that unfortunately they are frequently used not only in shampoos but also in creams.
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Caster Oil [PEG-150 Distearate/PEG -7 Glyceryl Coconate This should be noted that sulfated surfactants is including ECO TOXIC and it is very harmful for environment which is why most of the environmentalists are not agree with its importing.
Parabens are included in some of the shampoos and cosmetics as preservatives, this preservatives prevent the microbial growth bacteria and fungi but unfortunately they are so harmful for humans health and they can lead to different types of cancers, tumor, intensification of breast
cancer and etc, Thus this is suggested and advised to use the products which are para- ben-fee in order to remain healthy. The preservatives which contain parabens have estro- gen-like behaviors and they may lead to precursors of cancer, including breast cancer. Amines which are found in the formulation of some of the shampoos as triethanol- amine, DEA or ammonium lauryl ether sulfate can develop Nitrosamines which are car- cinogenic and they are harmful for health. This risk will be greatly increased when the preservative in shampoo contains Bronopol.
Salt, or sodium chloride that is used to increase concentration of shampoo will lead to high viscosity in shampoo which will make it look thick. Unfortunately majority of people believe that thick shampoos have high quality. Most of the produced shampoos contain salt in their formulation but producers never mention it on the label so when salt con- tacts skin and hair and it is not washed properly it will cause dryness, itch and eczema also its sedimentation on the hair shaft will leave a blurred appearance.
In addition to the above-mentioned other additives are found in some shampoos which are very harmful such as Acrylate polymers, urea, menthol, perfume oils containing limonene, I geraniol, furanocoumarin, aldehydes, alcil amines, alcil anteranilats and etc.
The following reputable organizations and scientific references have approved the destructive and adverse effects of sulfated anionic surfactants and sulfonated ethoxylates.
- IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer)
- OSHA(Occupational Safety and Health Administration of US)
- NICNAS(National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme)
- CEH (The centre for environmental health California)

Hair washing method
Contrary to popular belief, washing hair is not a simple task, as hair is a living and sensitive structure that requires special attention and care. The water used for washing should be at a moderate temperature; very hot or very cold water should be avoided, as extreme temperatures can shock and weaken the hair roots.
A- Oily hair washing method
Oily hair should be washed without gripping, massaging, or brushing. It should be cleaned using the palms of the hands in a gentle, circular motion, without letting the nails or fingertips touch the scalp. Oily hair should be washed no more than twice during a single bath.
B- Dry hair washing method
Individuals with dry hair often struggle with maintaining moisture. Therefore, dry hair should be washed as follows: it is best to wash dry hair every other day, or even daily if needed, using gentle hand massage without gripping or brushing the scalp. Dry hair can also be washed a maximum of two times during one bath.
C- Normal hair washing method
For normal hair—where the scalp is neither oily nor dry—the washing method can follow a combination of the techniques used for both oily and dry hair.
